My Go-To Tool for Perfect Lotions & Creams

Tracking temperature is incredibly important when making lotions and creams. In fact, one of the biggest secrets to creating a smooth, stable emulsion is keeping your oil phase and water phase within the correct temperature range. I use an infrared thermometer constantly during formulation — I’ve put so many miles on mine over the years, and it continues to be one of my most-loved tools in the apothecary.

This is my absolute favorite thermometer for quick, accurate readings while formulating, infusing, heating, or cooling. It’s fast, reliable, and makes temperature tracking truly effortless.

Why I Love This Thermometer

  • Better Accuracy, Even at a Distance; It features a 12:1 distance-to-spot ratio, which means it accurately measures temperature from a comfortable distance — perfect when you’re checking hot oil, melting waxes, or freshly heated emulsions. For the best precision, hold it about 14 inches (36 cm) from the surface.
  • Incredibly Easy to Use; Just point, hold the trigger, and instantly see the temperature anywhere between –58° to 842°F (–50° to 450°C). The reading appears on the bright LCD screen in less than half a second. Truly a one-handed, grab-and-go tool.
  • Bright, Readable Display; The large, backlit LCD makes it easy to read temperatures even in low light or while you’re mid-project. It comes with 2 AAA batteries, so it’s ready to use right out of the box.
  • Realistic, Real-Time Temperature Readings; Instead of reading a tiny pinpoint, this thermometer averages the temperature of the entire circular area you aim at—giving you a more accurate understanding of your batch temp. It also includes a maximum temperature display, which is incredibly helpful when heating oils or tracking cooling phases.
  • Versatile Beyond Formulation; While I primarily use this for lotions and creams, you can use it for cooking, checking pan or surface temps, candle making, equipment, dehydrators, tincture evaporation, and more. It’s a multi-purpose household and workshop essential.
